Te Occidere Possunt Sed Te Edere Non Possunt Nefas Est

My week in Florence coincided with Calcio Storico, an annual championship game of the earliest form of Futbol. Teams are comprised from each of Florence’s four neighborhoods and they march (with drum corps and flag bearers and queens in tow) to Santa Croce. They then beat each other half to death for the white calf. But don’t let the Michelangelo-designed costumes fool you. It is an absolutely vicious game. There are no rules. Dying at Calcio Storico is an honor. These are the descendents of the Gladiators after all.
I prefer rugby. Go All Blacks!
